We didn’t just visit; we immersed ourselves in the breathtaking landscapes of Costa Rica. Based on our actual family travels, I have crafted this proven Costa Rica 7 day itinerary (with a few bonus days added for beach relaxation) to help you plan the trip of a lifetime.

Why This Itinerary Works
This route hits the “Sweet Spot” of Costa Rican travel. It covers three distinct ecosystems: the Caribbean lowlands, the volcanic northern highlands, and the Pacific coast rainforests. It is action-packed yet allows for moments of pure bliss. While this is an itinerary that I can build for you to travel independently, we chose to work with a private travel designer and guide who organized all of the local transportation and had exceptional recommendations that perfectly suited our family.
Our Route:
- Day 1: Arrival in San José
- Day 2: Tortuguero National Park (The Amazon of Costa Rica)
- Day 3: Transit to Arenal & Hot Springs
- Day 4: Sky Adventures & Cultural Farm Tour
- Day 5: Rincón de la Vieja Volcanic Park
- Day 6-7+: Manuel Antonio National Park
Day 1: Arrival in the Urban Jungle
San José
Most international flights land in San José (SJO). While many travelers rush to leave the city immediately, we found that a private transfer to the Radisson San Jose was the safest and most stress-free way to decompress after a long flight. Depending on your arrival time, staying in San José lets you take a short walk to stretch your legs and begin experiencing the local culture without the pressure of a long drive right after landing.

As soon as we landed, we met our guide, Jose, at the airport, and hopped in the van with our private driver. After grabbing a quick lunch, we had a chance to make a short visit to the Presidential Palace and walk through some of the parks downtown. In the afternoon, grabbing an Imperial by the pool truly hit the spot.

The Professional’s Verdict: Do not underestimate Costa Rican traffic. On our trip, there was a serious accident on the one main road leading out of the mountains that added four hours to our drive. This is why I strongly suggest hiring a private driver or guide rather than renting a car on your own. It transforms a potentially stressful navigate-yourself situation into a relaxing scenic drive where you can just look out the window. We actually spoke to a couple at one of our stops who had a flat tire on their rental car and no spare. Don’t let that be you!
Day 2: Journey to the “Amazon of Costa Rica”
San José to Tortuguero (during turtle mating season)
This was perhaps the most unique part of our Costa Rica 7 day itinerary. Tortuguero is isolated, accessible only by boat or plane, which makes it feel like a secret world. This leg of the trip is highly recommended during the green sea turtle nesting season, which extends from July to October and peaks August to September. Other turtle species also nest in this area at different times, including leatherback turtles from March to June and hawksbills from March to October.
We started with grabbing a yummy breakfast, including the traditional gallo pinto (rice and beans) at the Radisson, to fuel our adventure ahead. We then boarded our private transfer that included a scenic drive through the massive Braulio Carrillo National Park (which became even more scenic with the 4-hour detour mentioned above!). After arriving at the port, we grabbed our luggage and hopped on a boat to our lodge. This isn’t just a commute; the boat ride itself is a spectacular safari. We navigated through a maze of canals where we saw caimans, spider monkeys, and basilisk lizards before we even checked in.
Where We Stayed: Pachira Lodge
We stayed at Pachira Lodge, located just five minutes from the entrance to Tortuguero National Park. The experience was pure “glamping” in the best way possible. After getting unpacked and taking a quick dip in the pool, we grabbed dinner and got ready for the evening’s activity.

The Main Event: Sea Turtle Nesting
If you visit between July and October, a turtle observation tour is a must-do. Tortuguero means “Region of Turtles,” and it is one of the most important nesting sites in the Western Hemisphere for green sea turtles.
After dark, we stepped on a boat that whisked us off to a remote area where we took a short hike to the beach. There, we witnessed a colossal 300lb green sea turtle laying her eggs in the sand under the moonlight. Although we couldn’t take a picture, we will never forget this magical, spiritual experience. Note that this is a highly regulated activity to protect the wildlife; you must go with a guide, and absolutely no photos or lights are allowed on the beach.
We then returned to Pachira lodge, which is immersed in the jungle, and the rooms have screens rather than glass windows. This allows the symphony of the rainforest to drift in as you sleep.

Warning: Be prepared for nature’s alarm clock. The Howler Monkeys in this region are crazy loud—their calls can be heard up to three miles away—and they woke us up at 5:00 AM. It was a wild, unforgettable way to start the day.
Day 3: Chasing Volcanoes and Hot Springs
Tortuguero to Arenal
After another delicious breakfast at Pachira lodge, we headed toward the iconic Arenal Volcano. To break up the drive, we stopped in Sarapiquí at Guarumo Lodge for lunch. This place is a hidden gem for birdwatchers. The owner has nurtured an incredible bird garden where we saw toucans and honeycreepers swooping down right from our table. It turned a standard lunch stop into a memorable wildlife encounter. The food was amazing too, one of the best meals of our trip!

Where We Stayed: Los Lagos Resort & Spa
Los Lagos Hotel, Spa and Resport was the next stop on our Costa Rica 7 day itinerary. For families, this resort is an absolute paradise. Located at the base of the volcano, it offers stunning views and sits on a massive 1,050-acre property.
The highlight here is the water. The resort features natural hot springs fed by the volcano’s geothermal energy, alongside cool water pools and thrilling waterslides that my kids (and husband) loved. We stayed in a Standard Room, which was surprisingly spacious, featuring two double beds and trundles that pull out, easily accommodating our family of five. In total, there are 10 different pools of varying temperatures, ranging from hot-tub-hot to swimming pool cool.

Expert Tip: The resort is huge and on a steep hill. The rooms are spread out among smaller single-story buildings across the property. If you don’t have a car, use the free internal shuttle to get from your room to the hot springs and restaurant. They are never more than 5-10 minutes away from any spot in the resort, and you can always call the front desk to be sure that one is on the way.
Day 4: Adrenaline and Culture in La Fortuna
Arenal
If you want a Costa Rica 7 day itinerary that your teenagers will brag about, you must include a canopy tour in Arenal.
The Adventure: Sky Adventures Park
We spent the morning at Sky Adventures, which offers the safest and most exhilarating way to see the rainforest. We utilized a special arrangement through my agency to get a 20% discount on the package.
- Sky Tram: We started with a peaceful gondola ride that rises smoothly through the rainforest, offering panoramic views of Arenal Lake and the volcano.
- Sky Trek: Then came the rush. We ziplined down a series of cables stretching from mountain to mountain. These are high-speed lines that let you fly over the canopy. It was breathtaking.
- Sky Walk: For a slower pace, we walked the hanging bridges. These bridges, some up to 230 feet high, offer a mesmerizing perspective of the forest floor and canopy.

The Cultural Twist: Finca Educativa Don Juan
After the adrenaline wore off, we visited Finca Educativa Don Juan for an organic lunch and tour. This isn’t just a farm; it’s a fascinating lesson in sustainability. We learned about their “metric zero” philosophy (zero food miles) and watched how they process sugar cane and cacao. We even got to taste raw cacao beans! It was delicious, educational, and a great way to connect with the local culture. And the coffee…

Day 5: Mud Baths and Dry Forests
Arenal to Rincón de la Vieja
Leaving the lush, humid rainforest of Arenal, we drove about three hours northwest to Rincón de la Vieja. The landscape here shifts dramatically to a tropical dry forest, which feels like a completely different world—hotter, windier, and rugged. This could be an optional stop for travelers who are less interested in seeing the drier and more arid side of Costa Rica. However, experiencing all of the different climates of this small country is truly an amazing thing.
We took a short hike at Rincón de la Vieja National Park, where we saw and smelled the volcanic activity, including steaming mud pits and sulfur deposits.

Where We Stayed: Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin
Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin is a historic ranch hotel that is the ultimate basecamp for adventure lovers. We treated ourselves to a Master Suite, which offered two king beds and plenty of space to spread out.
The “Spa” Experience: Rio Negro Hot Springs
You don’t need a fancy salon to feel rejuvenated here. We visited the Rio Negro Hot Springs, which are part of the hotel property. The experience involves painting yourself with volcanic mud rich in minerals like zinc and magnesium.
It is a therapeutic and fun ritual:
- Heat up in the thermal pools.
- Cover yourself in gray volcanic mud (we took some hilarious photos here).
- Let it dry, then wash it off in the cool, crystal-clear river.
- Relax in the pools again.
The mud is said to reverse aging and alleviate inflammation. Whether that’s true or not, our skin felt amazing afterward. We also took a short hike to the Oropéndola Waterfall, a stunning turquoise cascade located in a canyon near the hotel entrance. There, you can do a few cannonballs off the side into the deep blue pool below.

Day 6-7: The Grand Finale
Rincón de la Vieja to Manuel Antonio
To wrap up our Costa Rica 7 day itinerary, we headed south to the Pacific Coast. On the way, we stopped at the famous “Crocodile Bridge” over the Tárcoles River. Peering over the edge to see massive crocodiles sunbathing below is a terrifying yet cool sight that you simply cannot miss.

Where We Stayed: Tulemar Resort
We saved the best for last. Tulemar Resort is widely considered one of the best resorts in the world, and for good reason. We stayed in the Maunaloa Villa, a spectacular two-story unit nestled right into the jungle.
Note: The Maunaloa Villa has an exterior staircase connecting the bedrooms, which gave the teenagers a sense of independence, but it’s something to be aware of if you have very young children.
Why Tulemar is Special:
- The Sloth Institute: Tulemar houses a non-profit dedicated to the conservation of sloths. While this isn’t a “petting zoo” (which is unethical), you are almost guaranteed to see sloths hanging around the property because of the research and release work they do there. We learned so much about the rehabilitation of these adorable creatures, and our daughters weretotally obsessed with them.
- Private Beach: The resort has its own exclusive beach with shuttle service, kayaks, and boogie boards. It is secluded, safe, and the perfect place to unwind.
- Wildlife: We didn’t even have to leave our deck to see wildlife. We had white-faced monkeys visiting us right at the villa!

Adventure: White Water Rafting & ATVs
After taking some time to enjoy the serene nature of the resort, we were ready for some more action so we headed out for high-octane adventures.
- Rafting: Our family booked a white-water rafting trip through Tulemar with Amigos del Rio on the Naranjo River. It was a thrilling class III/IV experience that left us all soaked and smiling. The guides were all amazing, super friendly, and engaging.
- ATVs: The boys tackled the muddy backroads on an ATV tour with FourTrax, exploring palm plantations and rugged terrain.

Practical Tips for Your Trip
To ensure your Costa Rica 7 day itinerary is as flawless as ours, keep these expert tips in mind:
- Book in Advance: Properties like Tulemar and Pachira Lodge are exclusive and fill up months ahead of time. Tulemar, in particular, requires a 50% non-refundable deposit, so you need to be committed.
- Pack for Two Climates: We experienced hot, humid weather in Tortuguero and dry, windy heat in Guanacaste. Quick-dry clothing and rain gear are essential.
- Trust the Experts: We worked with a guide/driver for large portions of the trip. Given the road conditions—like the accident that delayed us—having a professional handle the logistics allowed us to focus on the fun rather than the stress of navigation.
- Budget Accordingly: A guided scenario like this, including high-end activities and private transfers, can run a few thousand dollars for the guided portion, plus accommodations. It is an investment, but the value you get in safety, comfort, and local knowledge is priceless.
Summary
This Costa Rica 7 day itinerary can easily be compressed into 5 or 6 days, or stretched to 9 or 10 days for more beach time). It offers the perfect blend of wildlife, culture, and adventure. From seeing a jaguar’s habitat in Tortuguero to zip-lining past a volcano and relaxing on a private beach in Manuel Antonio, this trip was truly unforgettable. Whether you are looking for a thrilling family vacation or a romantic getaway, Costa Rica delivers.
